RYA Powerboat Level 2 for yacht crew: tenders, ICC and commercial endorsement

Driving the tender is one of the first jobs a new deckhand is trusted with — taking guests ashore, running errands and helping with mooring. The RYA Powerboat Level 2 course is the standard starting ticket for it. Here is what it covers and when you also need a commercial endorsement.

Key takeaways

  • ✓Powerboat Level 2 is a short practical course, usually run over two days, covering safe handling of small powerboats.
  • ✓It is the basis for the International Certificate of Competence (ICC) for power craft, which many countries accept for leisure boating.
  • ✓To use it for paid work on British-flagged vessels under the MCA small commercial vessel codes, you need an RYA commercial endorsement.
  • ✓The endorsement needs an ENG1 or ML5 medical, Basic Sea Survival or STCW Personal Survival Techniques, an SRC radio certificate and the online PPR course.
  • ✓Commercial endorsements must be revalidated every five years.

What the course covers

Why it matters for your first yacht job

Many deckhand adverts list Powerboat Level 2 as required or preferred, and captains expect new deck crew to drive the tender safely from day one. Combined with STCW Basic Safety Training and an ENG1, it makes a junior CV much stronger.

If you already hold an ENG1 and STCW, the commercial endorsement mostly means adding the SRC and the online PPR course.

Many yachts also use jet skis. The RYA Personal Watercraft course is a separate certificate and is often asked for on yachts with water toys.

Rules change and differ between flag states. Use this guide as a starting point and always confirm current requirements with the issuing body or flag administration before you book a course or accept a job.
