The ENG1 seafarer medical: a practical guide

The ENG1 is the UK seafarer medical certificate, widely accepted in yachting. It confirms you are fit to work at sea. Many other flags issue their own equivalent — the principles are the same.

Who issues it

The ENG1 can only be issued by an MCA-approved doctor. Approved doctors exist in the UK and in many other countries, including popular yachting hubs.

How long is it valid?

A certificate can also stop being valid earlier if you develop a condition that affects your fitness to work.

  • •Up to 2 years for seafarers aged 18 and over
  • •Up to 1 year for seafarers aged 16–18
  • •The doctor can issue a shorter certificate if your health requires it

Tips

  • •Book well before your current certificate expires — appointments can take time to get
  • •Bring your previous certificate, glasses or contact lenses, and a list of medication
  • •Upload the new certificate to your profile so clients see it is current
Rules change and differ between flag states. Use this guide as a starting point and always confirm current requirements with the issuing body or flag administration before you book a course or accept a job.
